Public Health Observatory – a new analytical centre for public health

The Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the Medical University of Lodz has established the Population Health Observatory (PHO) – a new research and analytical initiative aimed at supporting the healthcare system by providing reliable analyses based on scientific data.

The main task of the Observatory will be to systematically collect, analyse and interpret data on the health status of the population, monitor epidemiological trends and identify key public health risks. These activities are intended to directly support the development of evidence-based public health policy and contribute to better alignment of the healthcare system with the real needs of society.

Mission and vision

The mission of the Population Health Observatory is to provide high-quality epidemiological and analytical knowledge to enable effective decision-making in the area of public health, the development of preventive measures and the strengthening of the healthcare system.

In the long term, the PHO aims to become a leading research and analytical centre in Poland, using an interdisciplinary approach, innovative data analysis methods and close cooperation with public decision-makers to improve population health and reduce health inequalities.

Key areas of activity

The Observatory’s activities focus on two complementary pillars:

  1. Scientific and research activities for public health, including:
    • monitoring the health of the population through the analysis of health indicators,
    • creating health profiles and maps of health needs,
    • integrating epidemiological data and evaluating the effectiveness of preventive interventions.
  2. Health promotion and prevention, within which the Observatory will:
    • strengthen preventive measures in the field of lifestyle diseases,
    • develop programmes for the early detection of chronic diseases (including cancer, diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular diseases),
    • support screening and prevention campaigns at the population and regional levels,
    • develop e-health and modern forms of health communication,
    • integrate prevention with primary and specialist care.

Value for the university and the healthcare system

The establishment of the Population Health Observatory strengthens the university’s position as a leader in the field of public health and highlights its social commitment. The PHO will enable a real impact on the functioning of the healthcare system through the development of reports, recommendations and models of local health interventions, as well as active cooperation with the public and private sectors.

The Head of the Population Health Observatory is Monika Burzyńska, PhD, Associate Professor at the Medical University.

The Observatory’s activities will also contribute to the promotion of prevention and healthy lifestyles in the academic and local communities, including through educational initiatives, health-promoting events and cooperation with university departments and regional partners.

The establishment of the Population Health Observatory is an important step towards a modern, data-driven approach to public health and another element strengthening the role of the university in shaping health policy in Poland.
