MODERN PAEDIATRIC ONCOLOGY AND HOSPITAL PHARMACY IN ŁÓDŹ – COMPLETION OF KEY INVESTMENTS AT THE CLINICAL AND DIDACTIC CENTER

At the Clinical and Didactic Centre in Łódź, two major investments have been completed, significantly improving care for the youngest patients and streamlining the hospital’s pharmaceutical operations. On Tuesday, September 23, a press briefing was held to mark the opening of the Interregional Paediatric Oncology Centre and the CSK Hospital Pharmacy. The participants included:

  • Adrian Witczak, Member of the Polish Parliament, Chair of the Parliamentary Team for Nutritional Therapy, Vice-Chair of the Subcommittee on Science and Higher Education
  • Adam Pustelnik, Vice President of the City of Łódź
  • Małgorzata Iwanicka-Michałowicz, Acting Director of the Investment Assessment Department, Ministry of Health
  • Janusz Piekarski, Rector of the Medical University of Łódź
  • Monika Domarecka, Director of Central University Hospital
  • Wojciech Młynarski, Head of the Clinic of Paediatrics, Oncology, and Haematology

The Medical University of Łódź not only develops its campus and clinical infrastructure but also effectively acquires and utilizes public funds in a way that directly benefits society. Our investments are not just about university growth – they provide concrete support for patients across the region,” emphasized Prof. Janusz Piekarski, Rector of the Medical University of Łódź.

Interregional Paediatric Oncology Centre – A New Standard of Care for Children

On the 14th floor of Building A1 at the Clinical and Didactic Centre, the Interregional Paediatric Oncology Centre has been established, covering approximately 3,400 m² and modelled on the best centres in Europe and the USA. The facility includes:

  • Department of Paediatrics, Oncology, and Haematology for Younger Children (East Sector) – 25 beds, enhanced epidemiological standards, air pressure control in patient rooms, playrooms for children, and rest areas for parents.
  • Department of Oncology and Haematology for Older Children (West Sector) – 19 beds with similar hygienic and functional conditions.
  • One-Day Treatment Unit for Paediatric Oncohaematology (Central South Sector) – 8 treatment stations, registration area, diagnostic and consultation rooms.
  • Paediatric Bone Marrow Transplant Unit (Central North Sector) – 5 single-patient rooms designed as protected environments, ensuring the highest post-transplant care standards.
  • Paediatric Oncological Intensive Care Unit – equipped with advanced monitoring systems and apparatus for intensive medical supervision.

Thanks to support from the Ministry of Health and numerous foundations and associations, the centre is equipped with state-of-the-art medical technology, enabling the use of world-class diagnostic and therapeutic methods.

“This investment transforms paediatric oncology in Poland. We have created a place where young patients and their families do not only receive modern treatment but also comprehensive support – psychological, rehabilitative, educational, and dietary,” emphasized Prof. Wojciech Młynarski, Head of the Clinic of Paediatrics, Oncology, and Haematology.

Hospital Pharmacy – Modern Pharmaceutical Infrastructure

Simultaneously, the construction of a new Hospital Pharmacy was completed. The facility will oversee medication preparation and supply for the entire hospital. It is one of the largest and most modern facilities of its kind in Poland, both in terms of scale and technology:

  • Pharmacy robots and automation – including a cytostatic compounding robot, an individual dose robot (the first in Poland), and an automatic mixer for parenteral nutrition.
  • Modern aseptic chambers – 5 stations for cytotoxic drug preparation, 2 parenteral nutrition stations, and sterile medication stations.
  • Automated drug warehouse – capacity of up to 40,000 packages, with full control over rotation, batch numbers, and expiration dates.
  • Carousel storage systems – horizontal and vertical systems for rapid assembly of treatment sets.

This is a next-generation pharmacy – fully automated, integrated with hospital systems, designed for patient safety and staff efficiency. It allows us to better support treatment in highly specialized units, such as oncology and intensive care,” said Dr. Monika Domarecka, Director of Central University Hospital.

The pharmacy spans two floors, totalling over 2,500 m², and is supported by advanced IT systems, improving efficiency, minimizing errors, and ensuring the highest safety standards.

Both investments were financed with funding from the Ministry of Health.
