NEW FACE OF CAMPUS A1 BUILDING

On October 6, 2023, a press briefing was held on the campus of the Clinical and Didactic Centre (CKD) in connection with the unveiling of the new facade of A1 building. The Medical University of Lodz is completing the thermal modernization project of this facility: the building has not only got a new façade, but its windows and lighting were also replaced.

The press briefing was attended by prof. Radzisław Kordek, Rector of the Medical University of Lodz and Waldemar Buda, Minister of Development and Technology.

Building A1 has undergone a metamorphosis thanks to the project:  “Deep thermal modernization of the strategic building of the Clinical and Didactic Centre campus of the Medical University of Lodz” financed by European Funds, from the Cohesion Fund, for the amount of over PLN 76 million.

One of the most distinctive buildings in Lodz has changed its appearance: we replaced the turquoise with shades of blue. However, this project was not only about the visual effect, but above all about the insulation of the building and the resulting financial savings. We have already thermally modernized 19 facilities at the university, but this undertaking was the largest in its scale. This project fits perfectly into the currently ongoing second stage of CKD construction i.e. the adaptation of the top floors of the hospital, says the rector, prof. Radzisław Kordek

Building A1 is the largest public building in Lodz and includes 20 floors and over 69,000 m2 ( the size of  almost 10 football pitches) of usable area that was thermally modernised.

The Clinical and Didactic Centre of the Medical University of Lodz is an institution of great importance for the entire region. Thermal modernization of A1 building is a project that will allow medical staff to work more comfortably and effectively, and thus contribute to better treatment of all our patients, says Waldemar Buda, Minister of Development and Technology.

The thermal modernisation included:

  • light wet insulation of external walls and ceilings, 15,000 m2 (1.5 hectares) which corresponds to over two football pitches.
  • over 9,000 m2 of windows and doors replaced i.e., almost a hectare of glazing
  • construction of a photovoltaic power plant to generate power for the building
  • installation of an air-water heat pump to power the domestic hot water installation with a capacity of 155.00 kW i.e., approximately 100 typical home boilers.
  • Replacement of over 6 thousand lighting points, lighting fixtures, energy-saving LEDs.
  • Reconstruction of the energy management system to include power from renewable sources

The modernization and thermal modernization shall enable us to produce energy from renewable sources, reduce annual energy consumption and limit greenhouse gas emissions. Building A1 is already the 20th facility to be thermally modernized and thanks to such activities, the total energy demand at the university has decreased by 32% in recent years.
