World’s Best Hospitals 2021 list covered the world’s top hospitals from 25 countries: the USA, Germany, Japan, South Korea, France, Italy, Great Britain, Spain, Brazil, Canada, India, Australia, Mexico, The Netherlands, Poland, Austria, Thailand, Switzerland, Sweden, Belgium, Finland, Norway, Denmark, Israel, and Singapore. They were selected on the basis of the following criteria: standard of life/ life expectancy, the country population, the number of hospitals and data accessibility.

The ranking relies on three data sources:

• Medical experts’ recommendations, (doctors, hospital managers, health care providers),
• Patients’ surveys,
• Medical indices (Key Performance Indicators: KIP).

The number of health care entities taken into account for the purpose of the ranking varies between countries and is dependent on the total population and data accessibility. The third edition of the ranking included a total of 2,000 hospitals which stand out for their consistent excellence, including distinguished physicians, top-notch nursing care and state-of-the-art technology.

The organisers emphasise that the results can be compared only for the hospitals within the same country due to the health care systems specificity and diversity of data sources.
