PLN 30 MILLION FOR DIGITAL MEDICINE

On October 10,2023, MULDiMediC project of the Regional Centres of Digital Medicine was officially presented at the Clinical Research Support Centre.

The event was accompanied by a press briefing attended by Radosław Sierpiński MD PhD, President of Medical Research Agency, Jarosław Brózda, the 2nd  Voivod of Lodz, Prof. Radzisław Kordek, MUL Rector and Paweł Zawieja ,Vice-Chancellor for Organisation and Development, the project manager.

MULDiMediC Projects, with Medical University of Lodz as its Leader, was recommended for funding from Medical Research Agency in the call for establishment and development of Regional Centres of Digital Medicine (RCDM).

The initiative aims at establishing infrastructure, stuff and systems with a view to the ultimate establishment of Regional Centres of Digital Medicine Network, which should be translated into extensive research, clinical trials in particular, as well as favourable background for the development of innovative technologies in pharmacy, IT and other healthcare-related areas.

Over the last 4 years  Medical Research Agency donated nearly PLN 3,5 billion for clinical trials and research infrastructure. Currently, the Medical University of Lodz is implementing 17 projects which received total funding worth over PLN 100 million. What is of the highest importance is, however, that our patients are the ultimate beneficiaries of our joint initiatives. It is with the patients in mind that we design competitions and research to improve access to modern therapies. For many it is sometimes the only chance for a longer and better life. This time, we have allocated half a billion zlotys for digital medicine centres: medicine centres of the future, and one of them will be built right here, at the Medical University of Lodz, says Radosław Sierpiński MD PhD.

The Consortium application received 285 points and the funds of nearly PLN 30 million, which ranked it as nr 19 on the list of applications proceeded for substantial evaluation.

Medical University of Lodz will operate as MULDiMediC Project Leader in the Consortium

  • Independent Public Health Care Centre of Norbert Barlicki Memorial Teaching Hospital No. 1 of the Medical University of Lodz,
  • Independent Public Health Care Centre of the Central Clinical Hospital of the Medical University of Lodz
  • Independent Public Health Care Centre of the University Clinical Hospital. Military Medical Academy of the Medical University of Lodz,
  • University of Lodz,
  • Stanisław Staszic AGH University in Kraków.

Digital medicine means that medical care is being taken to a higher level. However, from the University standpoint, it is equally important to increase our competitiveness in the scientific area and in collaboration with companies. Admittedly, the project is very ambitious but such experienced partners guarantee success, as best evidenced by the high rating of our joint application. I would like to thank everyone who was engaged in work on the concept of this project and I wish you success in its implementation, says Prof. Radzisław Kordek, MUL Rector.

Medical Research Agency’s initiative to establish RCDM shall contribute to development of IT solutions in digital medicine which will enable medical data analysis as well as developing tools that facilitate work for health care specialists. This, in turn, should translate into therapy effectiveness and access to innovations for patients, which will satisfy the needs of our society and remove the barriers which still affect the health care system.

The newly created units will be the equivalent of similar, already existing centres based on digital data analyses, e.g. in United States. Systems such as MGB Biobank, which integrate data of patients treated at Harvard Medical School teaching hospitals, or the All of Us research program, are currently the source of many breakthrough discoveries.
