THE CORNERSTONE FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE NEW U1 TEACHING BUILDING HAS BEEN LAID

On July 3, 2025, a ceremonial signing of the foundation act and the laying of the cornerstone for the construction of the modern U1 teaching building took place on the campus of the Clinical and Teaching Centre of the Medical University of Lodz.
The act was signed by MUL Rector, Prof. Janusz Piekarski, and the representative of the General Contractor, Tomasz Seremet, CEO of Pekabex BET S.A.

They were joined in the symbolic cornerstone-laying ceremony by the Lodz Voivode, Dorota Ryl, the Marshal of the Lodz Province, Joanna Skrzydlewska, as well as university staff and students.

Following the official part of the event, a press briefing was held, during which details of the investment were presented along with its significance for the university development and the quality of medical education.

The U1 building is being constructed as part of the National Recovery Plan. It will be a modern, low-emission educational facility that will significantly improve the conditions for studying and teaching. Due to the technology involved, its completion is scheduled for September 2026.

This is not just an investment in infrastructure, but above all, an investment in the future of our university and the quality of education for new generations of medical professionals. It is a strategic step toward modern, sustainable education. I would like to thank all individuals and institutions involved in the implementation of this ambitious project,” emphasized Prof. Janusz Piekarski, Rector of the Medical University of Lodz.

The U1 building will include, among other things:

  • Modern teaching rooms, including hybrid classrooms equipped with advanced audiovisual equipment, enabling both in-person and hybrid learning;
  • Spaces for quiet study and group work – soundproof rooms equipped with computers with high-speed internet access, desks, chairs, whiteboards, and access to Wi-Fi and the university library resources;
  • Seminar rooms with capabilities for live transmissions from procedure and operating rooms, as well as IT systems enabling clinical case analysis;
  • Zones for intellectual activity and a Living LAB space supporting students’ creative development – a complement to the teaching process;
  • Educational support units, such as faculty offices and the Student Services Office.

As part of the first stage of the investment, a modern building with six above-ground floors and two underground levels will be constructed on the site of former abandoned facilities. In this way, we are bringing new life to the degraded space of the old laundry and kitchen, giving it a new purpose aligned with the vision of a sustainable, green CKD campus. I hope that in just over a year, this building will be full of life and become a permanent feature of our campus landscape, added Paweł Zawieja, Chancellor of the Medical University of Lodz.

For Pekabex, it is a great honour to participate in a project that will have a significant impact on the development of education, science, and the future of healthcare in Łódź and the entire region, said Tomasz Seremet, CEO of Pekabex BET, the project’s General Contractor. Thanks to the use of modern prefabrication technology, we will be able to precisely control the quality of produced elements, build in an environmentally friendly way, and significantly accelerate the construction process.

The U1 building is part of the project University Development Program – improving study conditions at the Medical University of Lodz through the construction, expansion, modernization, and equipment of university facilities aimed at increasing the number of students in medical programs. The total budget of the program is nearly PLN 190 million, with the U1 investment accounting for almost PLN 94 million.

This undertaking represents a vital step toward enhancing the quality of education and creating a supportive academic environment for future generations of students at the Medical University of Lodz.
