The Ministry scholarships for MUL young researchers

The Ministry of Education and Science announced the winners of scholarships for outstanding young researchers. The list of winners again included researchers from the Medical University of Lodz:

  • Marcin Braun MD PhD
  • Agata Gabryelska MD PhD

The Miniter’s scholarships are awarded annually to young researchers for their significant scientific achievements. This year a total of 1828 applications were submitted for the competition and The Minister of Education and Science decided to award 230 young researchers, including 37 doctoral students, representing 51 scientific and artistic fields.

Let’s learn more about our scholarship recipients:

Marcin Braun MD PhD, an assistant professor at the Department of Pathology since 2015.

His research area includes oncology, primarily breast cancer and haematological cancers. In his research he combines the achievements of basic science (mainly molecular biology and genetic engineering) and their potential applicability in clinical and diagnostic medicine (pathomorphology).

In the period of 2020-2022 Marcin Braun completed research internship in Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Harvard Medical School under the supervision of Prof. Piotr Siciński, one of the top authorities in research on cellular cycle. A scientific paper with M. Braun as the second author published in one of the top-tier journals i.e., Cancer Cell (IF 2021/22: 38.59, 200 MEiN points) was the first measurable outcome of the internship. The next groundbreaking paper on the role of Cdc7 kinase in the initiation of DNA replication as a new potential target for oncology drugs was published in the journal Nature (IF 2021/22: 69.50, 200 MNiSW points), and M. Braun was its third author.

In 2022 he won LEADER competition in the 13th call by the National Centre for Research and Development receiving funds for his project: “The design of multifaceted prognostic panel to predict the effectiveness of target anti-FGFR therapy in hormone-dependent cancers”.

During his undergraduate and postgraduate studies he received multiple awards, scholarships and recognitions, including Grade I Rector’s Award (seven times during 2016-2022), Rector’s Award for the academic teacher for his original paper (2021), START scholarship of the Foundation for Polish Science (2020), Award of the Medical Chamber for the best student of medicine (2014), scholarships of the Minister of Health and the Minister of Science and Higher Education.

Agata Gabryelska MD PhD, an assistant professor at the Department of Sleep Medicine and Metabolic Disorders since  2019.

In her research she mainly deals with sleep medicine and focuses on clinical presentation of sleep disorders and the mechanisms accountable for complications and comorbidities of obstructive sleep apnoea in particular.

To date, A. Gabryelska has been the manager of 5 research projects funded by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education and National Science Centre. Moreover, she is the winner of Preludium grant (National Science Centre) as well as 4 other grants. She holds the position of a co-supervisor of the Student Scientific Club Sleep Team, which operates as a research team, with A. Gabryelska  MD PhD and M. Sochal MD PhD as its heads.

She defended her doctoral dissertation „The impact of hypoxemia on the change of HIF-1 alpha expression in patients with obstructive sleep apnoea” before she obtained the title of a professional doctor, which was the second such case in the country and the first such case at the Medical University of Lodz. What’s more, her thesis was awarded by the Scientific Council of Medical Sciences of the Medical University of Lodz and won the award of the Prime Minister for an outstanding doctoral dissertation. A. Gabryelska MD PhD received numerous scholarships and awards, including the scholarship of the Marshal of the Lodz Province, the Minister of Health, the Kościuszko Foundation, the START Foundation of Polish Science or the European Society of Sleep Medicine.

As part of her research, she completed numerous scientific internships abroad, including ones at the Sleep Medicine Clinic of the University of Edinburgh (Scotland), at the Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy of the University of Freiberg (Germany), at the Department of Molecular Physiology and Biological Physics of the University of Virginia (USA), the Institute of Sleep and Rhythm Neurobiology University of Oxford (England) and the Department of Neurology at the University of Bern (Switzerland).

Currently, A. Gabryelska is doing her specialization training in psychiatry at the Department of Affective and Psychotic Disorders of the Medical University of Lodz.
